Plan is committed to transparency, accountability and ethical stewardship of every dollar entrusted to us. As part of a global organization working to advance children’s rights and equality for girls, we believe clear and accessible financial information is essential to earning and maintaining trust with our supporters and partners.

Global reach, shared accountability

For more than 85 years, Plan International USA has been part of Plan International, a global organization working toward a just world for children, especially girls. Across more than 80 countries, Plan partners with communities to advance children’s rights and equality for girls through locally led programs and global collaboration.

While our mission and impact are global, financial accountability is clear and structured. Financial reporting takes place at both the international and country levels to ensure transparency, compliance, and responsible stewardship of resources.

The figures below include a high-level global overview and a detailed snapshot of Plan International USA’s financial performance for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025.

How funds support our mission

Across the Plan federation, resources are directed first toward programs that advance children’s rights and equality for girls. At the same time, we invest in fundraising, systems and staff to ensure programs are effective, compliant and sustainable.

Program expenses

We work to advance girls’ rights in more than 80 countries worldwide. Program funding supports education, protection, health, youth leadership and humanitarian response, helping children and communities build safer, more equitable futures.

Fundraising

Our fundraising efforts are carefully planned and managed to balance the cost of donor engagement with our commitment to maximizing resources that directly support children and communities. These efforts help sustain long-term programs, respond to emergencies and grow support for girls’ rights worldwide.

Management and general

We invest in management, systems and skilled staff to ensure contributions are used efficiently and responsibly. This includes meeting the highest standards of accountability, such as those set by the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance.

Strong governance and infrastructure allow us to manage risk, ensure compliance and continuously improve how we work. These investments support long-term impact and responsible stewardship.

It is not simple work, but it is work that matters. The support of donors and sponsors makes it possible to create a world where every child, especially girls, can learn, lead, decide and thrive.

Sponsoring a child changes lives — including your own

When you sponsor a child, you open doors for their future. You encourage them as they learn, grow and dream. And you create a powerful ripple effect – fueling local solutions that transform entire communities.

How sponsorship works

Build a meaningful friendship

It all starts with a personal connection with a girl or boy who is waiting for a caring sponsor like you. Your letters, photos and encouragement tell your sponsored child, “I believe in you.” Your friendship encourages them to stay in school, dream bigger and reach their full potential. And that’s just the beginning.

Support community-led solutions

Your $39 monthly donation combines with other sponsors’ support to fund community-led solutions like clean water, education, health care and protection from violence. Together, you help to build stronger schools, safer communities and brighter futures.

Create ripples of change

That’s the power of sponsorship – one friendship creates ripples of change that lift entire communities for generations to come.

"Sponsorship transformed my life and also made a significant impact in the lives of many other children."

Sponsored children typically graduate from our program on or around their 18th birthday. In some cases, your sponsorship may end sooner than anticipated. Your sponsored child could move away, or Plan could phase out of the area. When it’s clear a community can manage its own development without us, we gradually phase out our participation. This is a cause for celebration, because it means our partnership has been a success!

When your sponsored child leaves or graduates from our program, we’ll contact you to transfer your sponsorship to another child.

We understand that circumstances change. If you need to stop your sponsorship, simply contact our Donor Loyalty team at 800.556.7918 or email [email protected].

At Plan, gender equality is integrated into all of our programs, including child sponsorship. We focus on girls because they face unique barriers to education and safety. They are more likely to be pulled out of school or forced to marry.
Experience and research have shown clear links between achieving gender equality, fulfilling children’s rights and ending child poverty. Investing in a girl’s future will not only improve her life, but also the economic condition of her family and her community. Gender equality is a benefit to all and a fight we must take on together.

When you sponsor a child, you can choose to sponsor a boy or girl. Children in all their diversity participate and benefit from our sponsorship program.

Plan is fully committed to ending violence against children and young people. We acknowledge our duty to promote the gender-responsive safeguarding of children and young people, particularly those with whom we work.

How our past shapes our purpose

Plan International’s history reflects decades of learning, adaptation and partnership with communities around the world. While our work has evolved over time, our focus has remained the same: advancing children’s rights and creating opportunities for girls to thrive.

For more than eight decades, Plan has adapted to a changing world while staying focused on what matters most: children, communities and opportunity.

A history of learning and change

Our beginnings

Plan was founded in 1937 in response to the humanitarian crisis following the Spanish Civil War, with a focus on supporting children affected by conflict. From the beginning, the organization recognized that helping children recover and thrive required long-term commitment, care and opportunity, not short-term solutions.

The belief that children deserve protection and opportunity, continues to guide Plan’s work today.

Our beginnings
Early beginnings: Plan’s work began with children affected by conflict, grounded in the belief that long-term care and opportunity matter.

Expanding opportunity

In the decades that followed, Plan expanded its work to support children and families facing poverty, inequality and crisis around the world. Programs grew to address education, health and protection, shaped by close collaboration with communities and local partners.

As the organization’s work expanded globally, it became known as Plan International, reflecting a broader mission and reach.

Centering girls’ rights

Ā Over time, Plan deepened its understanding of inequality and the ways it affects girls differently. This led to a stronger focus on girls’ education, protection and leadership, recognizing that advancing girls’ rights is essential to creating lasting change for families and communities.

Plan’s focus on girls lead to the globally known campaign named Because I am a GIrl. This campaign reached millions of girls through direct programming and changing of laws to end practices like child marriage.

How our past shapes our purpose

Plan International’s history reflects decades of learning, adaptation and partnership with communities around the world. While our work has evolved over time, our focus has remained the same: advancing children’s rights and creating opportunities for girls to thrive.

When girls are given the chance to lead, entire communities move forward.

Evolving toward systems change

Today, Plan works to address the root causes of inequality by combining community-based programs with advocacy, youth leadership and evidence-informed approaches. Young people, especially girls, are partners in shaping solutions, not just recipients of support.

A world where every child can thrive

We work with children, especially girls, to create a more just and equal world. We believe in the potential of every child, but know that poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination too often stand in the way.

By addressing the root causes of inequality, we help ensure children can grow up safe, educated and empowered to shape their own futures.

Until we are all equal.

Why equality matters

Children’s rights and gender equality are fundamental to human rights. When children are denied safety, education or opportunity, their paths forward are limited before they begin.

Girls are often the most affected. Harmful norms, unequal access to resources and violence can prevent girls from learning, leading and making decisions about their lives.

Achieving equality means removing these barriers so every child has a fair chance to succeed.

Why girls are central to our vision

When girls have the support they need to learn and lead, the impact reaches far beyond the individual. Educated girls are more likely to stay healthy, earn an income and support their families and communities.

Investing in girls strengthens entire systems and helps break cycles of poverty and inequality for future generations. That is why girls are at the center of our vision for lasting change.

Turning vision into impact

Our vision guides how we work every day. From early childhood through adulthood, we partner with children, families and communities to respond to crises, strengthen systems and drive changes in policy and practice at local, national and global levels.

Progress takes time. But with the support of partners and communities, we continue working toward a future where equality is not the exception, but the expectation.

Your leadership project is a youth‑driven, locally focused initiative designed to address an issue you’re passionate about. Through the Youth Leadership Academy, you’ll gain the skills to create a solution‑oriented project that advances gender equity and drives meaningful change in your community. The tools you develop will support you not only in this project, but throughout your future work as a changemaker, advocate and young professional.

Many Youth Leadership Academy fellows begin with small, local projects — and continue expanding their impact as active alumni.

Aanya, a 2021 YLA participant and former Youth Advisory Board member, discovered the widespread impact of period poverty both abroad and in her own U.S. community, which inspired her to take action. Through large‑scale product drives and awareness efforts, she collected more than 50,000 period products and distributed them to 37 low‑income schools.

After the Youth Leadership Academy, she expanded this work by founding the Global Girls Initiative, a nonprofit that continues to provide menstrual health support to underserved communities.
