Girls' progress is built one step at a time
Safety creates the foundation for girls to thrive. Education opens doors to opportunity. And the ability to shape their own future gives girls the power to pursue their ambitions and lead change in their communities.
These three areas are deeply connected, and progress in one strengthens progress in the others. That’s why Because I Am a Girl focuses on safety, education and future, because what’s possible for girls tomorrow depends on what we protect and advance today.
Safety
Girls cannot shape their futures if they are not safe. Whether facing violence at home, harassment online, risks that come with conflict and displacement, or harmful gender norms that limit their choices, too many girls still face threats to their safety every day.Ā
That’s why safety is at the heart of Because I Am a Girl. From responding to humanitarian emergencies to preventing gender-based violence and promoting safer online spaces, Plan International works with girls, families, communities, the private sector and governments to create the conditions girls need to learn, lead and thrive. Because every girl deserves the freedom to move through the world safely and confidently.
Education
Education is one of the most powerful tools for shaping a girl’s future. And that is why it is part of Because I Am a Girl. But learning doesn’t happen in isolation. Girls need safe schools, supportive communities and the freedom to attend class consistently without barriers standing in their way.Ā
They deserve access to clean and safe bathrooms, the ability to manage their periods with dignity, and an education that is uninterrupted by discrimination, poverty, conflict or crisis. Plan International works with girls, families, schools and communities to help more girls stay in school, complete their education and build the knowledge, skills and confidence to determine their own futures.
Future
When girls are safe and able to access a quality education, they are better equipped to shape their own futures. Yet too many girls still face barriers that limit their opportunities and ability to make decisions about their lives.
That’s why Because I Am a Girl focuses on creating pathways to leadership, economic empowerment and equality. From helping young women develop skills for employment and entrepreneurship to advocating for laws and policies that protect their rights, Plan International works to ensure girls have the opportunity not just to imagine a better future, but to build it for themselves. Because every girl deserves the freedom to choose her own path.
